JASON PHILLIPS; LEGACY IN THE DETAILS
Jason Phillips
On the latest episode of the Word of Mouth podcast, we had the privilege of sitting down with Jason Phillips, the visionary CEO behind Phillips Collection. Known for its confidently eclectic furniture and bold aesthetic, Phillips Collection is more than just a design brand—it’s a global story of legacy, sustainability, and creativity with conscience.
We covered a lot of ground—from his childhood travels through Southeast Asia with his parents to his leadership today as the brand continues to break new ground in design innovation and sustainability.
Founded in 1983 by Jason’s father, Mark Phillips, Phillips Collection has grown from a boutique importer into an internationally recognized design house with pieces featured in movies like The Hunger Games and homes of Hollywood’s elite. One of their most iconic pieces—the Seatbelt Chair—has become a symbol of High Point itself and was even adopted by the Visitors Bureau.
Jason introduced us to a fascinating concept known as Neuroaesthetics—an emerging field that explores how design choices can actually improve our mental and emotional well-being. He referenced the work of Mike Peterson and the Science in Design movement, which validates something many of us instinctively feel: that our surroundings deeply affect our mood, health, and creativity.
From embracing natural curves and organic materials to minimizing visual clutter, Phillips Collection is helping redefine what it means for a home to be comfortable and safe—psychologically as well as physically.
We also celebrated Phillips Collection’s recent Green Award win—an honor earned through thoughtful sourcing, responsible production, and community impact. Jason spoke candidly about their practice of reclaiming fallen wood, using every part of a tree (from root to crown), and supporting artisan communities across the globe. One of the most compelling parts of our conversation was around resisting the temptations of fast fashion in furniture. Jason emphasized the importance of intentional evolution—growing as a brand without chasing every trend.
