American Business Women’s Day pt. 2

In 1986 President Ronald Reagan officially recognized American Business Women's Day, honoring the increasing role that women have to play in the world of business today, as well as the accomplishments of businesswomen across the nation and the world at large.

Mary Darby, Showroom Operations Manager at Bernhardt Furniture is featured today as another inspiring woman we work with.

Q. Why do you think it is important to celebrate American Business Women’s Day?

It's nice for women to finally be recognized for their accomplishments. For so long they

were behind the scenes, never expecting the thanks and recognition they deserved. Thank

goodness things have changed.

Q. Have you faced any barriers in your career due to being a woman? If so, how did you overcome them?

Yes I have but when I was younger I was not very good at dealing with

them. If a man requested something he was being firm. If a woman requested the same thing

she was considered difficult. Thankfully that has changed for the most part. I am very lucky to be

with a company that greatly respects women.

Q. What is the most important piece of advice you have been given?

Take advantage of your opportunities. Never say "I can't". If you want respect, then

show respect to those around you.

Q. What is an important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?

Every person has something extremely valuable to offer. Also, kindness goes a long way.

Never forget to thank people for their hard work.

Q. Is there anyone that inspires you in your career?

So many women inspire me but I would sayTammy Nagem with the High Point Market Authority.

She handles her position with positivity and grace. She has no idea how watching her through

the years has taught me how to handle a stressful situation. She is pretty amazing.

Q. Is there anything else you would like to share?

I can't reiterate enough how much showing and demanding respect to and from those around

you matter. When I finally accepted that I deserved respect everything changed for me

in my career. Ending.....a great sense of humor works wonders!!
